Securing success in a rapidly changing higher education environment
Background: CIS was engaged by a leading University’s newly appointed Vice-Chancellor to help facilitate the development of a 5-Year Strategic Plan that would frame the key strategic goals and objectives as it positioned for the next wave of sector-wide change. With national and global imperatives driving heightened competition among higher education providers, new digital technologies dramatically changing the way universities engage with students and community expectations encouraging a rethink of partnerships, the Vice-Chancellor sought a renewed focus on the key areas that would help propel the University into the next phase of its development.
Approach: Working alongside the Vice-Chancellor and closely with the University’s Executive Team, CIS helped develop the core structure and content of the Strategic Plan through a series of executive workshops and key stakeholder interviews. Engaging broadly in an iterative and challenging manner, the initial version of the plan was developed in the form of a Discussion Paper, for broad university-wide circulation, consultation and feedback. Drawing upon the input received throughout the extensive consultation process, the final Strategic Plan was endorsed by the University’s Board of Trustees and made publicly available.
Results: The 5-Year Strategic Plan has helped to galvanise commitment to the University’s ground-breaking strategic aspirations and has served as a guide for other cascading plans within the University’s planning framework.
