Driving growth and cultural change through organisational redesign, leadership alignment and implementation support
Background: CIS was engaged by the recently appointed Faculty Dean of a top-10 Australian university to review the respective Faculty and School organisation structures and provide recommendations that would support ambitious growth expectations, help promote a more aligned, united and accountable culture among academic leaders and position the Faculty for stronger engagement with its key external stakeholder communities.
Approach: Working in a highly consultative manner with members of the Faculty Executive and representatives from each of the seven Schools, CIS developed a proposed two-School structure, supported by a strengthened Faculty Office. Numerous School merger options were canvassed with the Faculty Executive over a number of months, before a formal change proposal was prepared for staff and ultimate Senate consideration. CIS supported a staged implementation process, assisting with detailed organisation structure design, the development of key roles and responsibility statements, governance arrangements, staff communications and consultation.
Results: A number of years after implementation the University’s largest Faculty continues to grow at unprecedented levels, has a strongly aligned and entrepreneurial culture, and importantly, has forged a deep and collaborative relationship with its core external stakeholder communities. CIS continues to support the Dean and Faculty Executive with annual strategic planning sessions and other ad-hoc consulting initiatives.
